While many think of a hope chest as a piece of furniture that can be used to store various things in a home, there is another kind of hope chest that is used to bring hope to a young person who is growing up in a less than perfect world.
A number of charities across the country have begun programs of creating Holiday Hope Chests for those less fortunate. These are small boxes that have essentials and a present or two for a young person who is living in a shelter, hospital, or is dealing with a year in which they may not receive any presents for the holidays.
In this case, the chests are actually boxes you create and fill for a special child. If you think this project is something you would like to take part in, you can contact volunteering organizations to see who is collecting them, what children they need them for, and then create as many hope chests as you would like to brighten a child’s day. If you are not sure who to call, your local homeless shelters, social services office, department of children and families, and foster care programs will likely be able to help you figure out how to help.
Here’s what you need to make a holiday hope chest box:
-A shoebox or small plastic box about the size of a shoebox
-Wrapping paper and trimmings
-Toys and other presents
Making these chests is as easy as wrapping the shoebox, in two parts. That means the bottom of the box is wrapped as one piece, and the top as another, so the child and open and close the box without removing the wrapping paper. Use trimmings and ribbons to decorate the box to your liking. Many of the children who receive these hope boxes will think of them as their new treasure chests and keep these boxes for some time to come.
Now you need to fill the box. First let’s start with what you should NOT pack in the chests. Do NOT pack toy weapons, food items, balloons, or glass items. You also should not include money in your chests. Additionally, the items in the chest should be new, not used.
Depending on the child’s age, here are some ideas of the kinds of things you may want to include.
Babies (Up to 2 Years Old) – Baby toys that are rated for this age range, teething rings, blocks, stuffed animals, baby books, baby clothes, bibs, booties, hats, mittens, as well as useful baby shampoos and soaps.
3-9 Years Old – Any toys created for this age range which could include Legos, card and board games, books and coloring books, crayons markers and pencils, and other small items that are suitable.
10-17 Years Old – For boys include wallets, sporting goods, books, magazines, watches, disposable cameras, belts, or other similar items. For girls include journals, crafting kits, jewelry, nail polish, hair accessories and scented soaps.
In each of the hope chests, you can also toss in a card with a special holiday wish from you.
