Choosing baby sign language DVD sets from all the DVDs out there can be a challenge.
Even if your are not new to this subject, you still do not relate with what is needed to teach babies to sign, and many times you might end up buying the baby sign language DVD number 2.
Baby sign language DVD programs use different signing styles.
Some are based on made up signs and others use standard signs.
The standard format is recognized by teachers and other signers of a particular nation, so you may choose products which use the sign language native to your area: American Sign Language (ASL is used in USA,Canada), British Baby Signing (BSL) Australian Baby Sign (Auslan).
Made up, or home made signs do not use a particular standard set of signs. This system encourages the infant’s or parent’s creativity in making their own signs; or have modified gestures that are easier of the child to mimic.
When babies start using signs for communication, for some gestures , they do not use the standard sign exactly, at their stage o development their muscles can only do that much. But it makes no difference because the sign can be clearly identified.
Using the standard signs or made up signs will always lead to communication.
The clear disadvantage with using home made signs is that no one else knows the language of the signs except the parents and the baby.
In countries like USA ASL is preferred not just because it is used by the death community, but because many institution use it as a standard for teaching and learning babies to sign.
